MFU congratulates election winners

Minnesota Farmers Union (MFU) congratulates the winners in Tuesday’s election and we are ready to work with members of both parties and a new administration in Minnesota to promote a safe, abundant and ample food supply in Minnesota and the nation.

“MFU is prepared with ideas and solutions to help the next administration, legislature and staff address the large budget deficit and help move Minnesota and agriculture forward” said Doug Peterson, MFU President.

Several hundred MFU members will convene at our 69th annual convention November 20-21 in Minneapolis to debate many of these proposals and ideas.  Check www.mfu.org for detailed agenda.

Minnesota Farmers Union State Convention around the corner

St. Paul (November 5, 2009) - Minnesota Farmers Union (MFU) is having their annual state convention Saturday, November 21 and Sunday, November 22 at the Ramada Plaza in Minneapolis.

"Every year since 1942, Farmers Union members have gathered to develop our state policy from ideas they bring to the table," said Doug Peterson, Minnesota Farmers Union President.  "We then take that policy to the state and federal level and fight for the issues important to our members!  During policy debate this year, some of the issues I expect we will be discussing are health care, climate change, and fair pricing for livestock and grain production."

Along with policy discussion, there will be elections for both Farmers Union President and Vice President.  Doug Peterson, current MFU President, is running for re-election unopposed; and long-time MFU Vice President, Dennis Sjodin, has decided to not run for re-election.  There are four candidates for Vice President, and they are: Tim Henning of Adrian, Scott Hoese of Mayer, Tim Velde of Granite Falls, and Gary Wertish of Renville.

What the election results mean for MFU

Author:
Doug Peterson, Minnesota Farmers Union President

(November 17, 2008) - The election is now over. Well, the majority of races in Minnesota have concluded, except the Minnesota Senate race, which is now headed toward a recount between Senator Norm Coleman, and Al Franken.

The number of votes that separate the two candidates keeps fluctuating as individual counties go over their results one more time. The final election results will be reported by Tuesday, November 18th, and then the individual ballot recount can begin, which itself could take weeks.

In 1989, I was an observer in a State House recount, and it was well-run, by the local officials, as well as by the Minnesota Secretary of State's office. Minnesota is one of the few states that have both an electronic, and paper trail, to make sure that the integrity of each ballot is kept, and as the voter intended.
