MFU members heading to Texas for National Farmers Union convention

Minnesota Farmers Union (MFU) members will be attending the National Farmers Union (NFU) Convention in San Antonio, Texas March 13-15.

“The National Farmers Union Convention is important because it is a great display of grassroots policy-making,” said Doug Peterson, Minnesota Farmers Union President. “All the Farmers Union states get together and push for policies their states deem important to get in the National Farmers Union policy. It is farmer-made and farmer-lead policy-making at its finest!”

Minnesotans attending:

Trevor Jensen of Owatonna is on the National Farmers Union policy committee, which has the task of sorting through all resolutions passed at the many state conventions throughout the NFU organization. The Committee forms a working document, which will be debated and passed at the convention.

Chandler Winkels-Muff of New Richland will be attending as part of the National Youth Advisory Council (NYAC).  He was one of only eight people elected by his peers to be on NYAC. Chandler will make a presentation to the entire convention body, and help plan next year’s NFU All-States Leadership Camp.

Green Acres, Farm Bill implementation, and Clean Water & Wildlife amendment discussed at the MFU Convention

ST. PAUL (November 24, 2008) - The Minnesota Farmers Union (MFU) held its 67th annual state convention on Saturday, November 22 and Sunday, November 23. Delegates from every county across the state attended.

"The strength of our organization is the voice of each individual member in our policy," said Doug Peterson, Minnesota Farmers Union President. "One of the benchmarks of this organization is its grassroots policy, and we had hundreds of resolutions that passed on the county level, and were debated during our convention, which shows the great involvement and dedication of our members."

What the election results mean for MFU

Author:
Doug Peterson, Minnesota Farmers Union President

(November 17, 2008) - The election is now over. Well, the majority of races in Minnesota have concluded, except the Minnesota Senate race, which is now headed toward a recount between Senator Norm Coleman, and Al Franken.

The number of votes that separate the two candidates keeps fluctuating as individual counties go over their results one more time. The final election results will be reported by Tuesday, November 18th, and then the individual ballot recount can begin, which itself could take weeks.

In 1989, I was an observer in a State House recount, and it was well-run, by the local officials, as well as by the Minnesota Secretary of State's office. Minnesota is one of the few states that have both an electronic, and paper trail, to make sure that the integrity of each ballot is kept, and as the voter intended.
