SUMMARY:Women in Ag Day at the Minnesota State Capitol
DESCRIPTION:This is a save the date for Monday\, March 25\, for the first Women In Ag Day at the Minnesota State Capitol. The goal is to tell stories and create awareness about women in agriculture. What are the successes and challenges of women in agriculture? Let’s tell our story. We ask you to save this date and share it with others. More information and details will come soon by email and on this website: z.umn.edu/WAGN \nState Sen. Mary Kunesh and her colleagues on the Minnesota State Senate Agriculture\, Broadband\, and Rural Development Committee have invited women who are involved in farming\, ranching and agricultural businesses and organizations to come to the State Capitol. The day will include a hearing with the Senate Ag Committee\, time for you to meet with your legislator and a networking reception for you to meet leaders in the agricultural industry. \nIn preparation for this inaugural event\, Kunesh and University of Minnesota Extension are seeking your input to understand the barriers\, challenges\, opportunities and success you face as women in agriculture. The responses to this survey will be used to create a report that will be shared with state legislators so they can better understand the constituents in their districts and across the state. The survey should only take 3-4 minutes to complete. Follow this link. \nPlease note: if you attended the Extension Women in Ag Network Conference on Feb. 6\, this survey was on the table tents.

SUMMARY:Climate-Ready Woods
DESCRIPTION:As Minnesota’s climate changes\, forests will face pressures from tree diseases and insects\, heavier and more frequent rainfalls\, warmer temperatures and prolonged drought. One way to foster a healthy\, resilient woodland is by adding and encouraging species that are predicted to adapt well to these changes. \nTo help people choose appropriate species for their backyard woods\, UMN Extension used modeled climate response data to create regionally-specific recommendation lists of climate-resilient trees and plants. \nThrough adoption of these recommendation lists\, gardeners and woodland stewards can holistically improve forest health by enhancing the resilience of Minnesota’s woods to climate change. \nOlmsted County SWCD will share the programs available and information about their annual tree sale. \nSpeakers: \n\nAngela S. Gupta\, U of M Forestry Extension Professor and Educator\nAngela White\, Olmsted SWCD District Conservation Technician\n\nTime: Noon to 1 p.m. March 27 \nLocation: Regional Extension Office\, 140 Elton Hills Lane NW\, Rochester\, in basement classroom \nFor more information: Contact Gail Donkers\, gail@mfu.org

SUMMARY:The USDA Ag Census-- Minnesota Shines!
DESCRIPTION:Zoom In with MFU’s Ariel Kagan: “The USDA Ag Census– Minnesota Shines!” \nThe Census of Agriculture was released earlier this year\, and the headlines reflected the well-known but unfortunate trends in U.S. agriculture – we continue to lose farmers and farmland\, and of those remaining\, the farms are getting bigger and bigger. \nBut there’s also some good news in the Ag Census\, especially for Minnesotans. Bucking the national trend\, Minnesota has more farmers in 2022 than we did in 2017\, and a significant number of those farmers are women\, people of color\, and new or beginning farmers. \nThe Census of Agriculture\, conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) every five years\, works to be a complete count of U.S. farms and ranches\, and the crops and livestock they produce. Like the U.S. population census\, the Ag Census relies on survey responses from producers\, but also uses statistical models to account for under coverage and nonresponses. With data going back to 1840\, the ag census helps us see trends and understand what’s happening on our working lands across the nation. \nLearn more during this Zoom\, hosted by Dakota County Farmers Union. \nWhen: 7 p.m. – 8:15 p.m.\, April 4. The Zoom opens at 6:45 p.m.\, so join early. \nWhere: Zoom \nFor more information: Contact Linda Larson for Zoom login information.

SUMMARY:Brown County chapter to host climate resiliency meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Brown County Farmers Union is hosting a meeting on climate resiliency\, “Surviving Climate Change…Along for the Ride.” \nThe event will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday\, April 11\, at the Dawg Haus Bar and Grill in Sleepy Eye. All are welcome. \nAnyone interested in the challenges of our changing climate\, its effects on our lives and the lives of our children\, and how to contribute to the healing of the earth will learn from the program. \nPresenters will be Katie Black and Ariel Kagan. Black is the Extension Educator with the University of Minnesota Climate Adaptation Partnership. Kagan is the Minnesota Farmers Union Climate and Working Lands Program Director. \nThey will be speaking on creating a framework for resiliency on farms and how we can live with the changes that come with a different sort of climate\, both short and long term. What are actionable steps all of us can take to deal with a changing planet on our farms and in our homes? Following the excessive rains of last spring and the warmest winter in history\, living with climate change is especially topical. \nThe meeting is free and open to the public. There will be time for questions and discussion. \nCome before 7 p.m. and have a meal and support a new local business. \nFor more information\, call Randy Krzmarzick\, 507-794-2382 or Sue Griebel\, 507-354-4206.

SUMMARY:Women of MFU June Zoom gathering
DESCRIPTION:What: The Matriarchal Hour \nWho: Farmers Union women members. This gathering is gender-inclusive – trans and nonbinary participants are welcome to attend. \nDate: Every third Monday (June 17) \nTime: 2-3 p.m. \nMore information: In a recent gathering of the Women’s Programming Planning Committee\, a shared sentiment emerged: the need for an informal space where women can come together to foster camaraderie and meaningful connections. Recognizing the profound sense of community within Farmers Union\, members highlighted the importance of combatting the isolation often felt in rural Minnesota by intentionally setting aside time to connect with one another. \nOur aim is to establish a standing monthly Zoom call inspired by Extension Study Clubs. Each session will feature a designated facilitator who will introduce a topic of personal interest or expertise\, offering insights for no more than 10 minutes to spark discussion. Following the presentation\, ample time will be allotted for open discussion\, fostering a deeper understanding of one another’s backgrounds\, professions\, experiences and perspectives. \nOur discussions will revolve around themes central to agriculture\, food\, gender and equity\, reflecting our shared values and interests. Through this initiative\, we aspire to not only broaden our knowledge but also strengthen our bonds as a community. \nWe invite you to join us. Your presence and participation would enrich our discussions and help us build a vibrant community where ideas are shared\, connections are forged\, and friendships are nurtured. Together\, let’s create a space where women in agriculture can thrive and support each other. \nLocation: Join Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/82616900749?pwd=Y2U1cm9BSWVWT1BQcWF2RjlQRnVHQT09 \nMeeting ID: 826 1690 0749\nPasscode: 265018 \nDial by your location\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) \nQuestions: Email Lisa Holm.
