MFU releases People’s Town Hall report
ST. PAUL, Minn. – More than 600 farmers and rural residents attended the 10 People’s Town Halls organized by Minnesota Farmers Union (MFU) between March 18 and April 8, voicing concerns about the damaging impacts of a trade war, lack of action on a new Farm Bill, cuts to rural healthcare programs and the climate of fear created for immigrants in rural communities.
These comments are among those summarized in a report, Voices Need to Be Heard, compiled by MFU. The 24-page report identifies seven themes that emerged from the town halls.
“We held the town halls because people are frustrated that their voices aren’t being heard in
Washington, D.C., and St. Paul,” said MFU President Gary Wertish. “We organized town halls and listened. This report speaks for people who want a fair chance to earn a living and the freedom to live their lives in rural Minnesota. They want vibrant small towns, a strong agricultural economy, affordable healthcare, and a government that works well for everyone.”
The report’s release coincides with the National Farmers Union Week of Action, which calls on Congress to pass a Farm Bill. Learn more about the Week of Action at nfu.org/forfarmerssake/.
