SUMMARY:People's Town Hall in St. Charles
DESCRIPTION:From expanded tariffs and a potential trade war to firing USDA employees and potential cuts to Medicaid\, there’s a lot of news pouring out of Washington\, D.C. \nMinnesota Farmers Union (MFU) is sponsoring a People’s Town Hall from 1:30 to 3 p.m. April 7 at St. Charles Community Center\, 830 Whitewater Ave.\, to hear what family farmers and rural residents think of these actions and to learn what they want and need from their state and federal governments. The event is free and open to the public. \n“Farmers are wondering what a potential trade war\, proposed cuts to Farm Bill programs and layoffs at USDA offices will mean for them and their livelihoods. Minnesota family farmers are already facing uncertainty with rising input costs\, falling commodity prices\, concentrated markets\, a scarcity of childcare and difficulty accessing and affording health care\,” said MFU President Gary Wertish. “We want to hear directly from MFU members and other interested citizens on how the state and federal government can help them meet their needs and build robust family farms and rural communities.” \nMeetings are being planned for numerous locations around the state. SUMMARY:Climate-Ready Woods
DESCRIPTION:As Minnesota’s climate changes\, forests will face pressures from tree diseases and insects\, heavier and more frequent rainfalls\, warmer temperatures and prolonged drought. One way to foster a healthy\, resilient woodland is by adding and encouraging species that are predicted to adapt well to these changes. \nTo help people choose appropriate species for their backyard woods\, UMN Extension used modeled climate response data to create regionally-specific recommendation lists of climate-resilient trees and plants. \nThrough adoption of these recommendation lists\, gardeners and woodland stewards can holistically improve forest health by enhancing the resilience of Minnesota’s woods to climate change. \nOlmsted County SWCD will share the programs available and information about their annual tree sale. \nSpeakers: \n\nAngela S. Gupta\, U of M Forestry Extension Professor and Educator\nAngela White\, Olmsted SWCD District Conservation Technician\n\nTime: Noon to 1 p.m. March 27 \nLocation: Regional Extension Office\, 140 Elton Hills Lane NW\, Rochester\, in basement classroom \nFor more information: Contact Gail Donkers\, gail@mfu.org

SUMMARY:Dodge County Lunch-N-Learn in Wasioja
DESCRIPTION:Join Dodge County Historical Society member Jim Checkel for a tour of the last remaining Civil War Recruiting Station west of the Mississippi River and the ruins of the seminary\, one of the first colleges in the state of Minnesota. \nThe Recruiting Station was built as a law office for James George\, a Mexican War veteran who went on to lead many Wasioja men in battle during the Civil War. It was after some particularly patriotic speeches that many students at the seminary marched to George’s law office to sign up for service in the Civil War. \nAfter the war\, the town\, which once rivaled Rochester in size\, began to shrink as many men didn’t return. \nContact Gail Donkers for more information.
