Dodge County Lunch-N-Learn in Wasioja

Join Dodge County Historical Society member Jim Checkel for a tour of the last remaining Civil War Recruiting Station west of the Mississippi River and the ruins of the seminary, one of the first colleges in the state of Minnesota.

The Recruiting Station was built as a law office for James George, a Mexican War veteran who went on to lead many Wasioja men in battle during the Civil War. It was after some particularly patriotic speeches that many students at the seminary marched to George’s law office to sign up for service in the Civil War.

After the war, the town, which once rivaled Rochester in size, began to shrink as many men didn’t return.
