Legislative recap tour in Sleepy Eye

June 23 @ 5:45 pm - 8:00 pm

What: 2025 Legislative Recap Meeting. Join MFU Government Relations Director Stu Lourey to get updates about Farmers Union priorities and accomplishments in St. Paul and Washington D.C.

On May 19, the state legislature adjourned with many budget bills left unpassed. The agriculture funding bill, however, was passed on a broad, bipartisan basis with only 12 legislators voting against the package across both chambers of the legislature. Gov. Walz later signed the bill. The package increases general fund investment in agricultural programs by $9 million over the next two years.

At the federal level, the House Agriculture Committee passed its budget reconciliation bill, and it was included in H.R. 1 – One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which is now being taken up by the Senate. The bill, as passed by the House, extends the 2017 tax cuts cuts Medicaid and SNAP funding. There is concern it breaks the coalition needed to pass the Farm Bill.

This legislative update is a follow-up to the People’s Town Hall held earlier this year in Sleepy Eye. A People’s Town Hall report was compiled following the 10 meetings held across the state and is available on the Minnesota Farmers Union website. A limited number of printed copies of the People’s Town Hall report will be available at the June 23 legislative recap.
