Redwood County member earns national award
WABASSO, Minn. – A longtime farmer, farm organizer and Minnesota Farmers Union (MFU) member received the Bruce Miller award at the 124th anniversary National Farmers Union (NFU) Convention held March 7-9 in New Orleans.
Paul Sobocinski of Wabasso was recognized for his contributions to MFU, Minnesota agriculture and rural communities by the award given in memory of the late Bruce Miller, who served on the MFU staff. The award recognizes individuals who display a passion for family farming and rural America while promoting the work of the Farmers Union.
“Paul Sobocinski has been a leader in Minnesota agriculture for more than 40 years,” said MFU President Gary Wertish. “Paul was instrumental in organizing farmers during the 1980s farm crisis, was an early leader in the sustainable agriculture movement and has testified before the legislature many times. Paul and his wife, Candy, are transitioning their farm to beginning farmers, which gives Paul more time to mentor the next generation and advocate for family farmers and rural communities. As he retired from farming, he shifted his focus to supporting independent meat processors, part of the essential infrastructure needed by independent livestock producers. Paul continues to mentor his Farmers Union colleagues and reminds everyone to organize to build a better community for all.”
“I am honored to receive this award,” Sobocinski said. “I believe we must create a future of hope by welcoming young people, including immigrants, to enter farming and small businesses like independent meat processing in order for our communities to grow and thrive.”
The Bruce Miller award was given to five individuals from across the country at the national convention.
