The Farmer: Legislature extends BFTC

There were low expectations for much activity going into the second year of the biennium for the Minnesota Legislature, but there was some positive action for the state’s agriculture while other issues fell short.
The Minnesota Legislature is about as even as it can get. The state House of Representatives is divided evenly, with both the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party and Republican Party each holding 67 seats, while the DFL holds a one-seat advantage in the 67-member state Senate.
Following the end of the 2026 legislative session last month, ag group executives reflected on what did and did not get completed.
“We knew it would be a challenging year to get anything done because of [the evenly split chamber] and with it being an election year,” said Gary Wertish, president of the Minnesota Farmers Union and farmer from the Renville area. “We saw some positives and some negatives.”
