MASWCD: File for SWCD board position

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Minnesota depends on local leaders who care deeply about conserving the land, water, and natural resources that make our state extraordinary. Community members passionate about conservation are encouraged to run for supervisor positions within their local Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD). The filing period is May 19 to June 2, 2026.

SWCDs are local units of government and trusted conservation experts within communities across Minnesota. They provide technical assistance as well as funding and educational resources that help landowners and communities address local conservation priorities.

Each SWCD is governed by a board of elected supervisors who help guide the district’s mission, priorities, and stewardship efforts. SWCD Supervisors are trusted voices in our communities. They play an important role in how a wide variety of natural resources are managed in our counties, including wetlands, rivers, lakes, forests and farmlands. Supervisors serve four-year terms and are compensated for their time, travel, and expenses.

Individuals interested in serving should first contact their local SWCD to confirm which supervisor positions are open for election. A statewide SWCD directory is available at Find Your SWCD or by scanning the QR code below.

To qualify, candidates must:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Be an eligible voter
  • Reside within their district
  • Only be running for this office (with some exceptions)

After confirming openings with their SWCD, candidates who wish to be on the November ballot must file an affidavit of candidacy with their county between May 19 and June 2. Elected supervisors will then take an Oath of Office and begin their four-year terms in January.
