About the Camp
Minnesota Farmers Union Camp is affordable and open to everyone, regardless of their current or past farming background. It’s all about helping young people become good citizens by planting the seeds of responsibility, leadership and cooperation in an environment where those qualities can grow and flourish. Campers have opportunities to develop these qualities through some of the simple, day-to-day tasks at camp. These simple activities provide a common foundation for all campers to share the responsibility of making camp a fun, safe place to be and are the foundation of developing cooperation skills that can last a lifetime.
Basic Information
Housing and meals are provided and paid for by MFU the entire course of employment. Minnesota Farmers Union conducts five Monday-Friday overnight camps and five day camps throughout the summer. As a counselor, this job would require you to arrive at camp on Sunday afternoon and remain at camp through the following Friday for each of the five week-long camps. The day camps take place through-out the state and will require travel. All travel to and from camps will be provided by MFU. Prior to the start of the camps there is a two-week training period that takes place at the MFU office in St. Paul. During this time, you will learn everything you need to know in order to become a successful camp counselor with MFU. You will have a week off for the 4th of July holiday. Our camp is a co-ed camp and therefore we need both male and female counselors.
Essential Responsibilities
A Minnesota Farmers Union Camp Counselor is responsible for planning, leading and implementing core and non-core programs and experiences for children in small and large group settings. They will also be responsible for the general safety and development, growth, and skill achievement of the participants in their group. The counselor will provide high quality outdoor educational and recreational experiences for participants that focus on the MFU core values of cooperation, leadership, respect and responsibility.
- Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities each session. Activities may include crafts, nature, songs, games, opening and closing ceremonies, swimming, etc.
- Identify and respond to camper behavior issues
- Ensure that the site is kept clean, organized and free of litter
- Communicate with parents about participant’s experiences and report concerns to Camp Leadership
- Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports and daily attendance
- Know and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program
- Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas (includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers’ safety and their whereabouts at all times)
Required Qualifications
- Education classes or experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or a related area
- Upon hire, completion of MFU-provided First Aid and CPR certification
- Ability to lead, plan, organize and implement program activities
- Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision
- Strong organizational and communication skills
Required Physical Demands
- Must have the physical ability to lead and participate in camp activities which include, but are not limited to, hiking, canoeing, swimming, team building initiatives, building campfires, physical games and activities.
