Chippewa County members earn Bruce Miller award
CLARA CITY, Minn. – Two Minnesota Farmers Union (MFU) members received the Bruce Miller award at the 123rd anniversary National Farmers Union (NFU) Convention held earlier this month in Oklahoma City.
Josh and Cindy VanDerPol of Clara City were recognized for their contributions to MFU and Minnesota agriculture by the award given in memory of the late Bruce Miller, who served on the MFU staff. The award recognizes individuals who display a passion for family farming and rural America while promoting the work of the Farmers Union.
“Josh and Cindy are active in many ways in Farmers Union and certainly reflect the passion that Bruce Miller showed for the organization,” said MFU President Gary Wertish. “Josh has been a leading proponent of rebuilding the state’s local meat processing infrastructure, testifying on the issue several times at the legislature and working with the state’s meat processors to find needed solutions for family farmers who raise livestock. Cindy has graciously told her health care story many times as she advocates for affordable and accessible health care for family farmers and others who are self-employed. I thank them for their advocacy and congratulate them on receiving the Bruce Miller award.”
“Bruce’s passion for local foods and working together to build up rural communities has inspired us to continue that work,” Josh VanDerPol said. We feel that building up small meat processing creates opportunities for farmers and strengthens main streets across Minnesota.”
“Access to affordable healthcare is a necessity for farmers, small businesses and entrepreneurs to be able to compete and thrive in rural America,” Cindy VanDerPol said. “We are honored to continue to carry this forward for Farmers Union.”
More than 450 family farmers, ranchers and supporters attended the NFU Convention, held March 9-11.
